Basic Public Health Entomology and Insecticide Resistance Monitoring Training

Author: Arlo Cansino

BVEC Directors, Dr. John Grieco and Dr. Nicole Achee, alongside BVEC Staff, conducted a 3-day training session to cover basic entomology focusing on key vectors and vector-borne diseases in Belize. The training ensured the alignment of training with the National Strategic Plan for Malaria Elimination to cover topics such as mosquito-borne diseases such as Malaria, Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya; and appropriate responses to outbreaks or the resurgence of these diseases. The training provided an overview of surveillance tools and resistance testing protocols to test wild-caught mosquito populations for any suspected resistance development. The first cohort included 14 participants from the Northern and Central Region Vector Control Unit.
